A crossbite is when the upper jaw is too narrow relative to the lower jaw. This causes the upper teeth to be inside the lower teeth.
An expander is used to widen the narrow jaw to establish a normal shape. This expansion help create more space to allow the teeth to fit properly. There are many types of orthodontic expanders used to correct this type of problem. They are comfortable to insert and to wear. Once the crossbite is corrected, the appliance remains in for a few months to stabilize the correction. Expansion is very predictable in growing children.
