An open bite is a dental disorder that is often the result of a patient’s oral habit. Common habits are thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pacifiers and biting on a pencil or similar object. The basic issue is that the front teeth, typically both upper and lower, are forced apart to an extent that they do not touch each other when the back teeth are touching.
Before Treatment
Having an open bite creates multiple problems. First and most important it is impossible to correctly bite into food. Second the back teeth will wear excessively due to the extra forces which can also lead to Temporomandibular joint(TMJ) disorders. Additionally the patient's smile is adversely affected which can also compromise normal speech, frequently causing a lisp, which maybe cute in children, is not attractive for teens and adults. Yet another reason for this condition could be a where chronic jaw pain causes the patient to use their tongue to push the teeth apart so that the jaws can be held in a more comfortable position
