In an under bite, the lower front teeth are ahead of the upper front teeth. This is due to either the undergrowth of the upper jaw or overgrowth of the lower jaw. The condition tends to worsen with age, making it very advantageous to correct in growing children.

If this is left untreated in children it will frequently require jaw surgery in adulthood. Additionally, the molars will wear prematurely since it is impossible to bite with the front teeth, often resulting in chewing difficulty.
